چکیده

AIM To demonstrate the ultrasound biomicroscopic features of a ciliary body melanocytoma with extrascleral extension, and a conservative approach in its management. METHOD Observational case reports. Two cases of ciliary body melanocytoma were suspected at presentation, confirmed histologically by biopsy, and subsequently monitored for change by serial ultrasound biomicroscopic imaging. The main outcome measures were anatomical and functional preservation of the eye, with avoidance of formal surgical excision. RESULTS Ultrasound biomicroscopy allows clear visualisation of the tumours, and the ultrasound characteristic is of low homogeneous internal reflectivity. 5 year follow up with observation only demonstrates success with this conservative management approach. Histopathological evaluation confirmed melanocytoma. CONCLUSIONS Melanocytoma is a rare tumour. However if considered in the differential diagnosis at presentation and confirmed histologically, further management with use of the ultrasound biomicroscope as an accurate mode of imaging is an acceptable technique for preservation of the eye and avoids surgical excision.

A Case of Ciliary Body Melanocytoma Presenting as a Painful Iris Mass

We report a case of ciliary body melanocytoma in a Korean patient, which presented as an intermittently painful pigmented iris mass and was successfully managed by iridocyclectomy. A 52-year-old healthy man presented with an irregularly-shaped and heavily-pigmented mass at the iris root of his right eye. Visual acuity of the right eye was 20/20 with normal intraocular pressure. Ultrasound biomi...

SCIENTIFIC REPORT Ultrasound biomicroscopy: role in diagnosis and management in 130 consecutive patients evaluated for anterior segment tumours

Background/aim: Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is an important tool for assessing anterior segment pathology. This study sought to evaluate UBM in the management of anterior segment tumours. Methods: Retrospective analysis of medical records of consecutive patients referred to the ocular oncology unit, University of California San Francisco (UCSF), for suspected anterior segment tumours from 19...
